Mt Ruapehu's last major volcanic eruption in June 1996 where giant ash clouds billowed out of the mountain's crater. Mt Ruapehu is home to New Zealand's two largest ski areas and is also New Zealand's largest active volcano and provides numerous walks for all ages and fitness levels.
